Water-based lubricant is lube with water as its main ingredient, and it's the only type that is safe with every toy material — silicone included. It rinses off skin and sheets, works with latex condoms, and reactivates with a few drops of water instead of a full reapply. The trade-off is that it absorbs faster than silicone, so you top it up. If you want one bottle that works with everything you own, start with Aqua. If dryness is the problem you're solving, start with Timeless Aqua.
Water-based or silicone? Silicone lasts longer and is great in water — but it degrades silicone toys, and most good toys are silicone. Water-based is safe with everything, cleans up easily, and is the one I tell people to own first. Keep silicone for shower play with non-silicone toys — my silicone lubricant guide covers that side.
Jump to a pick:
Most people buy lube once, grab whatever is nearest, and never think about it again. Then a toy gets tacky, or something stings, and they decide lube "doesn't work for them." Almost every time, it was the wrong base or the wrong ingredient list — not lube itself.
What is water-based lubricant?
Water-based lube is a lubricant whose first ingredient is water, thickened into a glide with cellulose-type ingredients. That base is what gives it its three advantages: it's non-reactive with toy materials, it rinses off skin and fabric, and it can be reactivated with moisture — a few drops of water bring the slip back rather than needing a fresh pour.
It's also the base most compatible with condoms. Oil destroys latex. Water-based doesn't.
Water-based vs silicone vs hybrid vs oil
| Base | Safe with silicone toys? | Latex condoms? | Lasts | Cleanup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based | Yes | Yes | Shortest — reactivates with water | Easiest |
| Silicone | No — degrades them | Yes | Longest, waterproof | Harder |
| Hybrid | Check the label | Yes | Long | Moderate |
| Oil | No | No — breaks latex | Long | Stains |
That top row is the whole argument. If you own a silicone toy — and most quality toys are silicone — water-based is the only base you never have to think about. My full lube and sex toy compatibility chart breaks down every material pairing.
Hybrids are the exception worth knowing: Timeless Hybrid + DHEA blends water and silicone for longer glide, and its label lists it as safe for all toy materials. Any other hybrid, read the bottle.
And no, coconut oil is not a shortcut. I wrote a whole post on why coconut oil isn't safe as lube.
What are the best water-based lubricants in 2026?
1. Aqua — best overall
Best for: the bottle everyone should own. Slick, never sticky, and free of glycerin, propylene glycol and parabens. It's enhanced with olive leaf extract, pH balanced, vegan and cruelty-free, latex friendly, and safe for use with all toy materials. It reactivates with moisture, so a few drops of water revive it mid-session. This is my default recommendation when someone has no idea where to start.
2. Timeless Aqua — best for dryness
Best for: perimenopause, menopause, and persistent dryness. Same glycerin-free, paraben-free, propylene-glycol-free base as Aqua, with aloe leaf juice, squalane, Vitamin E, olive leaf extract and sodium hyaluronate added for hydration. It doubles as a daily vaginal moisturizer, and it's safe for all toy materials. If dryness is the actual problem, this is a better starting point than a plain glide. 3. Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer — best for skin care
Best for: treating your vulva like skin. Hyaluronic acid binds over 1,000 times its weight in water, so this one moisturizes while it glides. Water-based, pH-balanced, non-staining, and made without parabens, sulfates, dyes, added flavors or fragrances — also hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, vegan and cruelty-free. Good for daily comfort, not just sex.
4. Aqua Flavored — best flavored
Best for: oral. Eight flavors — strawberry, blueberry muffin, peach, vanilla bean, salted caramel, cinnamon bun and birthday cake among them — sweetened with stevia, so it's sugar free and easier on pH. No sticky finish, no aftertaste. Latex friendly and safe with toys, in a 4 oz bottle or a 2 oz travel size. Pairs naturally with my oral sex guide.
5. Just Like Me — best natural feel
Best for: people who want lube that doesn't announce itself. The re-wetting formula is built to imitate vaginal moisture, so it reads as natural rather than slippery. pH balanced, ISO certified and FDA licensed, and it rinses off skin and fabric. Comes unflavored, strawberry banana or watermelon. One note: this one contains glycerin. If glycerin is a trigger for you, take Aqua or Timeless Aqua instead — see Glycerin-Free Lube 101. 6. Organic Strawberry — best organic
Best for: the shortest ingredient list here. USDA certified organic with over 95% organic ingredients — agave leaf extract, chamomile flower extract, carrageenan — and a light strawberry flavor. Made without parabens, sulfates, dyes or added fragrances, and vegan. Cleans up with water.
7. Conceptria — best when trying to conceive
Best for: couples trying to conceive. Ordinary lube can work against sperm mobility; this one is formulated not to. pH-balanced to 7.25–7.8 to mimic fertile fluids, low osmolality at 300–410 mOsm/kg so it works with natural vaginal fluid, FDA cleared and biocompatibility tested, and compatible with sperm, oocytes and embryos. Made without parabens, glycerin, dyes, synthetic flavors, fragrances, sulfates or gluten. Condom note: compatible with natural rubber latex and polyisoprene, but not with polyurethane.
8. Aqua Jelle — best thick gel
Best for: staying power without switching to silicone. A luxuriously thick gel version of Timeless Aqua — same aloe, squalane, Vitamin E, olive leaf extract and sodium hyaluronate, same glycerin-free, paraben-free, propylene-glycol-free base, same all-toy-material safety. The thicker body means it stays where you put it, which matters for anal play and for anyone who finds thin lube disappears too fast.

What should you know before buying water-based lube?
Glycerin is the ingredient to check first. It's harmless for most people, but if you're prone to yeast infections or irritation, it's the usual suspect. Aqua, Timeless Aqua, Aqua Jelle, Conceptria and the organic formula are all glycerin free.
Osmolality matters more than the marketing. A lube far more concentrated than your own fluids can draw moisture out of delicate tissue. It's why Conceptria publishes its range — 300–410 mOsm/kg — and why a formula built to mimic natural moisture tends to feel better over a long session.
Reactivate, don't just reapply. Water-based lube doesn't vanish when it feels tacky; the water evaporated. A few drops of water and a moment of friction bring it back. Most people pour more when they didn't need to.
Check condoms separately from toys. Water-based is latex friendly across the board here, but Conceptria specifically is not compatible with polyurethane condoms.
Lubricant and moisturizer aren't the same job. Lube is for the moment; a vaginal moisturizer works on a schedule. Several of these do both — I explain the difference in Vaginal Moisturizer vs. Lubricant.
Clean with a dedicated adult toy cleaner only. Before and after every use, with Cleansing Foam adult toy cleaner. No household or antibacterial cleaners — they break down toy material and can throw off vaginal pH.
Store toys separately. One toy per Toy Tote, lined with Bioshield 75, so toys don't react with each other.
Lock them up. Kids, guests, or roommates? The small Locking Toy Chest (gold or black), or the large Lockable Adult Toy Chest — faux leather, velvet-lined, two compartments, carry handle, 3-digit combination lock.
What's the verdict?
If you buy one bottle, buy Aqua.
- Best for: anyone who owns a silicone toy and wants to stop thinking about compatibility.
- Buy it if: you want glycerin-free, pH-balanced, latex-friendly lube that works with everything you own.
- Skip it if: dryness is your real issue — take Timeless Aqua — or you need waterproof staying power for shower play with a non-silicone toy, where silicone lube still wins.
